The Slow School Zone Project is a citizen effort to reduce speeding and aggressive driving on
Muirkirk Road, at least during morning and afternoon rush hours on school days. The project supports, but is independent of, Montpelier Elementary School and PTA.

We invite participation by Montpelier E.S. parents and other community residents.

Slow School Zone Project volunteers encourage drivers to obey the school zone speed limit by being visibly present at either end of the school zone during morning and afternoon rush hours when our children are coming to and from school, by bus, car, or on foot.

Our efforts have elicited very positive response from commuters, commercial drivers, parents transporting their children, school bus drivers, crossing guards, and county police.

We carry signs that say simply:

We do not try to slow or stop traffic.

We do not chide or confront irresponsible drivers.

We do not supplement or substitute for crossing guards or student safety patrols.

We just wave and smile at all drivers, fast or slow. Our positive approach has already been very effective in reducing speeding and aggressiveness in the School Zone during rush hour.

Our hours of duty are 8:30 - 9:05 A.M. and 3:20 -  4 P.M. on school days, when a crossing guard is on duty at the cross-walk -- and the school zone yellow caution lights should be flashing.  (School hours for 2011-2012 are 9:00 A.M to  3:30 PM )

Volunteers choose what ever dates and times are convenient for them and may cancel a planned presence any time for any reason. We do not work in bad weather.

We need not be present every day, but the more often and the more of us, the better, of course.

If you are able to volunteer occasionally or just want to learn more about the project
please contact Gary Stone by email to Garold.Stone@gmail.com
